Calatheas Online Australia

Calatheas are a genus of plants native to to the Tropical Americas and are related to heliconias and gingers. They are popular as house plants due to their colourful leaves but also can make great plants for tropical landscaping in the garden. They are also great for large pots in courtyard gardens.

Some calatheas like calathea lutea are large growing, will take a fair bit of sun and are useful in creating a good microclimate; but in general you will find they do best in part shade with warm temperatures and high humidity.

PLease note most of our calatheas are sent as rhizomes.
We've concentrated our selection of calatheas to ones we feel are excellent tropical landscaping plants. WE've also added a few of their cousins the cenathes.

Calathea for Wet Tropics Landscaping and Nectar‑Feeding Wildlife

Calathea are standout foliage plants for Mission Beach, the Wet Tropics, and subtropical SE QLD gardens. Known for their patterned leaves, lush texture, and preference for warm, humid conditions, calathea thrive in rainforest‑style landscapes. Many varieties also produce nectar‑rich flowers that attract native bees, hoverflies, and small nectar feeders, making them an excellent choice for wildlife‑friendly tropical gardens.

Why Calathea Thrive in Wet Tropical Gardens

The Wet Tropics climate provides the exact conditions calathea need:

  • high humidity
  • warm temperatures
  • rich, moist soil
  • dappled rainforest light

These plants perform beautifully in shaded understories, protected courtyards, rainforest‑edge plantings, and moist, sheltered garden beds. Their bold foliage brings instant tropical character to Mission Beach landscapes and subtropical gardens further south.

Growing Conditions for Calathea in the Wet Tropics and SE QLD

Light
Calathea prefer bright, filtered light or dappled shade. They are ideal for shaded tropical beds, verandah gardens, and protected understories.

Water
Consistent moisture is essential. Calathea thrive in rich, damp soil but dislike waterlogging. Mulching helps maintain humidity around the root zone.

Soil
Moisture‑retentive, organic soil with good drainage. They respond well to compost‑rich mixes typical of rainforest gardens.

Temperature
Warm, humid conditions support strong growth. Calathea grow year‑round in Mission Beach and perform well in SE QLD with protection from cold winds.

Wind Protection
Shelter from strong winds to prevent leaf damage and maintain humidity.

Calathea and Nectar‑Feeding Wildlife

While calathea are best known for their foliage, many varieties produce small, nectar‑bearing flowers that attract:

  • native stingless bees
  • hoverflies
  • small nectar‑feeding insects
  • beneficial pollinators that support broader garden health

In rainforest‑style gardens, calathea help create a layered, wildlife‑friendly habitat that complements gingers, heliconias, lipstick palms, and other nectar‑supporting species.

Landscape Uses in Wet Tropics and Subtropical Gardens

  • Shaded rainforest beds
  • Understory plantings beneath palms and gingers
  • Moist, protected courtyard gardens
  • Tropical mass plantings for texture and colour
  • Wildlife‑friendly gardens supporting nectar feeders
  • Indoor‑outdoor transitional spaces in humid climates

Calathea are one of the most versatile foliage plants for tropical and subtropical Queensland landscaping, offering colour, pattern, and ecological value.
