In a cooler climate alpinia zerumbet is one of the best tropical plants going. In spring and summer it puts out long sprays of sea shell like flowers that elegantly drape from the plant. The lush emerald green leaves emit a sent when rubbed evocative of edible ginger. In some cultures the leaves are used to wrap fish before cooking.
